AR Optically "Flat Glass" attachment (SCHOTT®)

310.00

Film is a two dimensional record of a three dimensional scene. Ideally, the film should sit in one perfectly flat plane. In reality, the film can bend slightly inside the camera, and some lenses also have field curvature. Both effects can reduce sharpness, especially toward the edges.

What is a flat glass insert

In 1960 Rollei introduced the “flat glass” system: a plane parallel glass plate placed in the film gate. The film is pressed against the glass, so it stays flat across the entire frame. This keeps the film position constant and greatly reduces film curvature.

This idea originally comes from aerial photography, where perfect film flatness was critical.

Which Rolleiflex models support it

Not all Rolleiflex models can use a flat glass insert.

You can usually identify compatible bodies by opening the film back and checking the right film rail. There should be a small locating pin on the side.

Dust and scratches

In the 1960s and 1970s dust and small scratches on the glass were a serious issue because everything was purely analog. Today, with modern scanning and retouching, this is much less of a problem, especially if you use a new, clean glass insert.

My modern flat glass insert

Original Rollei flat glass inserts in truly new condition are impossible to find today, so I developed my own improved version.

I use modern, made in Germany SCHOTT® float glass. It has a nearly colorless, clear appearance and a very flat surface. The glass has:

-- AR coating on both sides

-- high transmission of visible and infrared light

-- very low micro roughness

-- excellent chemical and mechanical stability

VERY IMPORTANT:

This insert can be used only together with the special “flat glass” back. It will not work with a normal standard back.
